Graphics Rotation Day 3

On the third day of Graphics we had been given time to finish a project assigned to us on the first day. I had been working on the project, planning and experimenting throughout the week and I believe that I adhered to the brief. The brief was that we had to create a poster for an exhibition about ourselves in the year 2033. The exhibition had to be at a gallery and the poster had to be different.

I Chose do do a simple poster because I believe and always will do, that simplicity is beauty and is just better. After planning and working with typography I settled on a final piece and I really like how it turned out.

I Like the fact that the lines start thick and then converge giving a 3D type illusion and the typography is clear and simple. However, I wish I had the opportunity to make the colours more bold and clear. If I could re do this whole piece all over again, I would do it via computer aided design because then it would be neater and I would be able to play with the colouring a bit more.

Graphics Rotation Day 2

On the second day of graphics we worked with typography, I really enjoyed it because it gave me an idea of different types of typography.

We had to create 10 different ways to make letters. I really enjoyed the freedom that we had been given and it amazed me the way you could create letters out of something you would not really consider.

I chose to do various different way such as connecting scattered dots, free hand with eyes closed, left handed free hand, masking tape 3D, using pins and many more.

I like the way that I could do whatever i want, however, the results did not turn out the way I expected. They seemed to be very plain and boring and if I had the opportunity to do this again I would find more experimental ways to come up with typography.

Graphics Rotation Day 1

On the first day of our graphics pathway we had a talk from the tutors and then did some drawings with our eyes closed, left handed and our mouths. I found this an interesting way to start the beginning of the pathway, However it was done to create an open mind and to teach us a new way to illustrate designs. Once we had done those quick sketches we were told to do an A1 illustration of an ear of a person on our table.

I chose to focus on Katie's ear because she was sitting directly opposite me and I had a great angle to draw from. I used charcoal because it makes it easier to create distinct marks and textures which I like.

I like the fact that it is dark and you can see the full textures of the ear as well as the earring. It makes me believe that I got the perfect contrast between the dark and the light which creates an eerie effect. I believe that if we had a bit more time than 30 minutes then I would of been able to make it a lot more realistic. This exercise has taught me that I need to work a lot faster.

3D Rotation Day 3

On the final day of our introduction 3D pathway we had a very interesting day, we sat down and had to draw 20 sketches of a structure that could hold 3 balls off the ground, however the balls should not touch each other and the structure had to be designed to be built with twenty pieces of raw spaghetti and held together by glue from a hot glue gun.

After doing twenty sketches I came to an overall design which I was happy with. Unfortunately this design was harder to build than I had expected. I like the fact that the design was simple and elegant which ties to my love of minimalist design. However, I do believe that with steadier hands and a bit more time I believe I could have made it look a lot more aesthetically pleasing.

After we had made our structures we all put them on a table and looked at the designs, I have to admit that they are all very beautiful and create a nice, almost 'pop art' style.

(Authors Own, 2013)

After we had all placed our designs on the table in front of each other we discussed them and then were given 1 piece of A2 paper and 2 pieces of A4 paper to create a skeletal structure in which to protect our design.

I like my design for structural support, however I do think it is pretty ugly. If i had a bit more material to work with I think that it would look better and be more structurally sound.

Once we had finished supporting our structures we were told to place them in a square so the structures could be "tested", suffice it to say the testing method was dropping a plastic sheet on our structures. No design stood after the test.

3D Rotation Day 2

Our second day started off with a very interesting brief, we had to design 5 bridges using paper and masking tape, the catch was that after our break we would be put into groups and had to use our designs as a starting point for an actual bridge built to a scale out of thirty bamboo sticks, 10 pieces of cardboard and parcel tape.

I decided to design 5 contemporary and elegant bridges. They had very minimalistic and simple designs which I like to place in my designs because I believe that simplicity is beauty.

I like these designs because as I said, they are simple and beautiful. However, I do believe that there are a few structural problems in a few of the bridges that I dis like. With a bit more time management I would have been able to make the designs more structurally sound, so I just need to work on my time management.

After our break we were put into groups of 7, within my group we sat and decided which idea would be best and then we got to work. I really enjoyed working with the group and we worked well together producing a working bridge in which a remote control vehicle was able to drive over.

I really like the design of the final model because it is simple and elegant which consists of two bridge designs, a suspension and supported structure. It was easy to build and I like the fact that is was really asymmetrical. I do not like the fact that we had limited materials to work with but it made it more challenging which I enjoyed.

3D Rotation Day 1

Our first day of 3D really opened my eyes into what goes on in the pathway. I really enjoyed what the whole pathway was about, the design and making the models. The first day we started with a few sketches from small, meaningless lines and it was interesting what you could make out of them.

On the first day we had to make a water bottle stand that could support a full bottle. I tried to be different and designed my stand with inspiration from a card stack. Unfortunately it did not hold the bottle.

I like the design because it was different and contemporary. I did not like the fact that the design seemed so plain, but in a way it is very minimalistic with crisp clean lines and the pure white colours.

Our second brief was to design something that keeps our body at least 500mm off the ground and had to be made out of 4 pieces of cardboard and masking tape. In addition, we had to design it so that is was "flatpack" like you get from Ikea. I liked this brief because it gave us the opportunity to express ourselves in anyway we wanted.

I decided to design a castle themed stool, with a spacious interior and is easily taken apart or put together. I like the fact that it fits my design idea's however, it seems a bit untidy and it could have been put together a bit better.

Review on Structure and Clarity Exhibition

Today I went to the Tate Modern to view various exhibitions and I chose to review a room in the structure and clarity exhibition. The room had work done by Ellsworth Kelly with themes of form, colour and scale. In addition to the artist, the room was curated by Ann Coxon.  This exhibition of Kelly’s work was not current with pieces ranging from 1951 to 2006 and the pieces were not laid out in a chronological order.

My original reaction to Kelly’s work was that it is very simple and beautiful, Kelly used very clean lines and mainly primary colours which creates a calming effect on the viewers. In my opinion, there is an air of the dada movement infused into Kelly’s pieces by the way of the strong lines and the fact that it is so minimalist. I believe that the work portrayed in the Tate conveyed a message of “beauty is Simplicity” which I can relate to because I believe that simplicity is much better than complexity. The moment I walked into the exhibition of Kelly’s work the pieces creates a physical feeling of calmness and a psychological feeling of relief which is what his pieces were made to do.

I like this exhibition because Kelly’s pieces and themes have a connection to the work that I like doing. I believe that the use of form, colour and scale tie very well into my work and my beliefs, I love working with clean lines and distinct colours, which in reality should not work but seem to accentuate and enhance each other.

(Kelly, 1991 (Orange Relief with Green))

Above is one of the pieces featured in the exhibition put on to commemorate Kelly’s ninetieth birthday. I love the way the green and orange work so well together and I love how the orange section protrudes from the green canvas creating shadows.

To view this exhibition one needs to enter it with an open mind and then fully embrace themselves and their view of art to get the full meaning of the pieces done by Kelly, these pieces will help inspire all artists, including me to look harder into form, scale and colour. I believe that Kelly’s work has already helped me with my work because I now have a greater respect for colour, form and scale.

Memory Poster

Today we were asked to create a poster of a memory. I chose to do this project by creating a poster of a family trip we had in Kenya, with my grandparents. I wanted to represent the memories by linking them to the sound and greenery of the forests in Naivasha. I like this image because I believe it portrays the sound and greenery from the way I edited.

I do not like the typography though, I think it is too simple for the background design. Although, there is a nice contrast between the busyness of the background and the simplicity of the typography.

Timeline

We were asked to create a timeline of our experiences this week. We were told that it could be done in any medium and in anyway. I chose to sit on my balcony last night and design the London skyline through my computer. The lights represent the outline of  the Timeline and it is meant to be read from left to right. The reason I chose to do this timeline in such a way is because when we started this week and were told to bring 10 items of relevance it was very open, then with Blade Runner, The Serpentine, The V&A and the burial it became smaller for me. In other words, the beginning of the week I was very confused and everything was so broad and then when I got to the Burial it gave me closure.

I like this image because I think it represents my journey this week, in addition it took a lot of time and editing to come out like it was, yet it seems so simple. I sat on the balcony and started with a black image on my laptop and then I tinkered and played with the way the lights appeared to me across the Thames.

I do not like the fact that it seems too simple, I fear that my work will be underestimated. Therefore, on my next project I will work with a lot more busy area's and make my work seem a lot more complicated.

The Time Capsule Project Continued... The Burial

Are brief for the time capsule project was to bring ten items and then bury them as a time capsule. I chose not bury my capsule per say, but I have hidden it somewhere for someone who only looks really hard to find. I chose to hide it in a discreet area inside my loft behind a huge wardrobe and water heater.

The reason I chose to do that rather than bury it is because it is different and it will be to someone who lives in my old flat.

The first two images were taken to show all of the items that have been placed in my time capsule, I edited them in such a way to create an aesthetically pleasing image. However, I also did it because it highlights the items inside the time capsule.

(Authors Own, 2013)

The one thing that I do not like about this image below is the fact that the light has made it slightly unclear, but in my opinion it still creates an understanding of what is in the capsule.

(Authors Own, 2013)

The next two images are edits of the area where I placed the capsule, the reason I chose to edit them in such a way is because they are dark places and the contrast adds some colour and an extra air of mystery to them.

I like the fact that the wood and white metal is so prominent in the image below and that the other areas are so dark. My only issue is that I could not get round to get a clear image of the actual area the capsule has been placed.

(Authors Own, 2013)

Once again I like the light pieces and dark areas in this image as they add an air of mystery, the one thing that I don't like is that it seems so pixelated. I would have preferred to get around the heater to show a better view of the hiding place. I learnt from this project that I have to plan the areas I photograph a lot more.

(Authors Own, 2013)

(Authors Own, 2013)

The rest of the images are of me placing the capsule. Once again I should of planned it a little bit better because there is not a lot of variety. However, I like the editing aspect of the images as they show light and dark areas.

Through this project I learnt a lot about time management and planning. I really enjoyed the challenge even though I need to realise to look into briefs a lot deeper. I should take a lot more care and forethought into my planning for my future projects and I will enhance my planning and management skills by devising a proper, well thought out plan as soon as I have been assigned with a brief.
