Evaluation of the past 6 weeks

Over the past six weeks at my first year of Ravensbourne, we have gone through multiple stages. It started out with research week, then the IT and Academic Writing week followed by the 3D, Graphics, Lens Based Media and Fashion and Textiles rotations. I really believe that this was a good way to start out because it gave me a taste of all the different aspects within the Foundation Diploma. I really enjoyed working through the different rotations but it was not without difficulty. It was hard to get into working again having been off from school for such a long time but once I got into my rhythm and started applying myself I really began to enjoy it.

My favourite week out of the past 6 definitely has to be the Graphics rotation, I found it enjoyable yet challenging at the same time and I really enjoyed the teaching style of the graphics tutors, especially Andy. I learnt that graphics is not what many people think it will be, there is a lot of typography related work and it is not just about coming up with unique ideas.

Over these past few weeks I have learnt a lot about the different aspects in each rotation, how to research and reference correctly and how to manage my time. Even though I am not fully comfortable with my time management I will work on getting it perfect. The one thing that I have had difficulty with throughout the weeks has been my sketchbook. I am a visual person and also a perfectionist, if something is not to my standard I hate it and with not stop until it is perfect. I do most of my work using digitally aided software and I am not very comfortable with my drawings and hand writing, so I have struggled with my sketchbook enormously. I am still not a hundred percent convinced that it is correct and I do not like the fact that my drawings, sketches and hand writing look untidy and unorganised to me. however, this is something with which I will need to work on and persevere.

All in all, I believe that I have gotten on well throughout the past 6 weeks, I have enjoyed working on my blog and I have enjoyed all the interesting projects set to us in the different rotations. I just really need to keep on working on my sketchbook and my time management so that I can do the best that I know I can in this course and the others I aspire to take on in the future.

Fashion and Textiles Rotation Day 3

On the last day of the Fashion and Textiles Pathway we had to create a final piece, but we could collaborate with another person. I chose to collaborate with Mike Greenshields. We chose to work on a Waistcoat because it was something different from just dresses and head pieces. The day helped us work out different ways to design and tailor items of clothing (Although it had to be made out of paper) and it was quite fun.

I like how the waistcoat eventually turned out, we had originally planned to do a full suit jacket but realised that the arms were possibly the hardest part of a suit. This was a good experience and if I could go back and do it again I would do it the exact same way because it came out just the way we wanted. I also like that throughout this week, each day has been linked to my first day in the pathway with the use of a paper 'airplane'.

Once we had made the waistcoat, we were asked to do a catwalk. We had originally designed the item for Olivia so we asked her to model it in conjunction with her own piece and they actually worked really well together. Below are my pictures from the catwalk of Olivia and the other students with there items.

Once the catwalk was done we had to take our model and get pictures of them wearing the item on each floor of the building. This was good because we got to capture the item in different lights and atmosphere's.

Fashion and Textiles Rotation Day 2

On the second day of the Fashion and Textiles Pathway we had to bring in images of full body models and then cut and paste different textured paper over the full body of the photo to create different styles relating to our previous days work. For example, we played with creating different textures throughout the day and making different styles.

It was interesting to see what you could come up with when being allowed to whatever you like. I found it very free and enlightening to just be able to do anything but in a way it was hard because you could not really focus on a design because your mind just wonders. In the end I was happy with the designs that I came up with because they relate to the previous days work. I would have done a lot more intricate designs if I had a more direct brief but it did teach me focus and direction.

Fashion and Textiles Rotation Day 1

On the first day of our Fashion and textiles Pathway we were asked to create 5 samples, it was a very ambiguous brief but it gave us a lot of freedom. I chose to create simple but aesthetically pleasing samples because I had a feeling we were going to have to make items of clothing out of the samples.

I like how I created simple and beautiful pieces, however I think i could have made the pieces a little bit more complicated because to me it seems as though I had taken the easy way out. If I had a bit more time, I would have created more intricate and detailed pieces, but we only had half an hour to make them.

As soon as we had finished our samples we had to pick one of the 5 samples and create twenty identical versions is sizes from A4 to A2. I chose to replicate my first image because it was simple and could be used in various ways. Once we had done our replications, we were put with a partner and then worked with other peoples samples to create various outfits.

In a way it was actually enjoyable, however I would have preferred to use my own samples as I knew what I could do with them. Although, that did help me to learn to think quickly and come up with spontaneous designs. If I could do this again I would think a bit more in depth with regards to the designs so that I could create unique pieces.
